St. Isaac


The Cathedral St. Isaac, transformed now in museum, was built in 1819-1858 by the French architect Auguste de Montferrand. The Cathedral is built on a plan of Greek cross, with a high cupola resting on a drum with column and four secondary cupolas. The interior can contain 14 000 people, is decorated with 43 varieties of stones.
