The construction of this white limestone building high of 81 m was decided in 1878 to commemorate the memory of Vittorio Emanuele II, architect of the Italian unit. Inaugurated in 1911, its esthetics, with the eyes of its Piedmontese builders, wanted to express the new destiny of Rome, become since 1870 the capital of the kingdom of Italy. Since 1921, this altar of the Fatherland shelters the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
