Cidade Baixa


Cidade Baixa is the low city of the downtown of Salvador Bahia. It would seem that the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci entered in the bay on November 1 1501, the All Saints' day, from where its name of Baía de Todos os Santos (Bay of All the Saints). It is only into 1549 that Tomé of Sousa arrived from Portugal; to found, on royal order, the first capital of Brazil.
