Potosi
Potosi owes its fame for its altitude, highest in the world (4090 m) for a city (130 000 inhabitants), but also for its silver resources. Its history and its splendour, its tragedy and its horror, are closely related to the precious metal. The city was created in 1545, following the discovery of a silver seam in Cerro Rico. Its mines appeared as the most productive and lucrative in the world. |
